Most of us live a dual existence, our lives taking place simultaneously in two different worlds—one unyielding and physical, the other an ever-changing landscape of emotion. Both can be confusing. We meet others in the external world, where we try to interpret through clues and experience what the other person is feeling. Here it is possible to deceive, to smile despite the pain, and to laugh when our insides are begging us to cry. We don’t have as much control over the internal world. We are forever subject to its whims and inclinations. The most we can do is to wrap our arms over our stomachs or press a hand over our hearts in the hope that those feelings won’t manifest—that the truth will remain inside where no one can see.
